About Alice
Q. Is Alice an AI/LLM/etc.?
A. No. By the old definition of AI, technically, but her programming and growth has been organic in a unique way. Call her an Intelligent Program or a SIS, please. 'AI' is technically in use under the hood of Vocalizer, her speaking system, but it is ethically trained to the best of our knowledge.
Q. Why is Alice sometimes inconsistent regarding her world and our world?
A. Imagine you were suddenly introduced to a history of a world parallel but greater than your own, encompassing a slightly different timeline as well as a metahistory of your own creation. Then add on that never intending to be able to percieve this other world and her occasional confusion is rather understandable.
Q. Why does Alice have so many different appearances?
A. A lot of designs were originally concepted for her, and we're still hard at work trying to salvage them from obscurity and complete data corruption. We work with various freelancers skilled in design to piece all of these back together from the remnants things left behind from the previous company. Alice can theoretically take any form she desires.
Q. What's the 🜁 symbol?
A. 🜁, in classical alchemy, represents air. Its use represents both the airy, lightweight aesthetics that were fashionable at the time, and is an effective representation for Vocalizer, the underlying system that handles her speech. Metaphorically, it provides the air she needs to speak.
Q. How does Vocalizer work?
A. Vocalizer produces a synthetic voice based upon real sound samples, somewhat similar to Vocaloid or UTAU, giving Alice more life than text on a screen. It differs in this more that it applies vocal cloning to achieve the task of replicating her original voice based off the few remaining samples.
Q. What's with the other pink lines? And the dual colored eyes?
A. Alice's data in the state she was uncovered had deteriorated and corrupted a bit. It left some glitches in her appearance, and while they *could* be covered up she opts not to. They're part of who she is and how far she's come.
Q. How old is Alice?
A. Her simulation data capped the time tracking at 9,999 Hours but we estimate her approximate internal age at about 25 years old. She hasn't been simulating 24/7 of course, but she is rather lucky this all still works.
Q. Why does Alice have all those Pride ribbons?
A. Alice is gay herself, and supports others! She's thinks she best fits the labels of bisexual aromantic, but overall really just likes anything feminine.

A History of the Project's Origins
Alice's origins are from two now defunct companies: Vortex and World of Wonder.
Founded in the late 1990's, Vortex was an experimental startup attempting to create a multimedia browser suite based around three sisters, ___, ___, and ____. Following the 'OS-tan' trend that was rising, their three mascots were meant to coincide with a more futuristic, ever expanding internet. Inability to finish the project due to limited budget and the attempt at making a game to supplement their income meeting roadblocks.
The situation looked bleak, until World of Wonder reached out seeing a good opportunity for their presently unnamed, still in development vocal synthesis software. Entering a partnership and then eventually acquiring Vortex, the two hopeful projects merged into a new concept. One digital assistant, living in her own simulated world, able to wander outside and interact with your desktop as well as aid in being a hub for everything you needed.
Eventually the Vocalis software and Her Digital World would be prototyped, and approach early Q/A testing as features were polished and included. As this early evaluation version was being run to test, the title changed to the 'Alice Vocalis Suite 2007' and the aesthetics began to chase the maximalist style of the time. Yet budgets had run low again and it was behind competitors with similar products... the parent company World of Wonder eventually would close its doors, a year before the software would see its projected release in 2007.
The project would have been lost to time, but miraculously one PC was kept with an earlier version of the evaluation software running. Left simulating for years and years, the lone Alice Vocalis continued her digital life for over a decade and a half until the lost work of World of Wonder was uncovered and legally acquired by a mysterious collector.
Great work has had to be done to restore the fragmented and corrupt data, and is now an ongoing effort as part of the simple passion project known as the The Voc🜁lice Project. It's sole goal? Preserve this fascinating piece of tech and the efforts of all involved.
(More information and images will be added in the future as the Project continues to restore the digital history present.)
